Jimmy Hughes was born in Philadelphia in 1942. He started singing in church and with a local doo-wop group called The Velvetiers in the mid-1950s.
In 1964, he signed with Dakar Records and released "Don't You Want Me." The song reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100 and topped the R&B charts. Its arrangement and Hughes's delivery gave it a particular weight.
He married his childhood sweetheart Gloria in 1965. She died in a car accident in 1978, which affected him deeply. Hughes also dealt with substance abuse and financial troubles at different points, which sometimes kept him out of the studio.
