Jimmy Witherspoon was born in Gurdon, Arkansas in 1920. He started performing on the streets of Memphis as a teenager, and after a period in prison for marijuana possession, he moved to Los Angeles and joined the Central Avenue Blues Band. In 1949, he recorded "Ain't Nobody's Business," which became his signature song.
During the 1950s and 1960s, Witherspoon toured extensively and released albums like "Blues on the Corner" and "Spoonful." He worked with other blues musicians including B.B. King and Muddy Waters. Songs like "Cold, Cold Feeling" and "Key To The Highway" showed his distinctive, gravelly vocal style.
Witherspoon was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 1985. He continued performing and recording, incorporating elements of soul and R&B while maintaining his blues foundation.
