JLrap formed in Rio de Janeiro around the early 2010s, with three friends using their initials for the name: Jonnas on vocals, Lorran producing, and Raph as DJ. Their 2015 single "Aqui É Zika" broke through nationally, pulling from funk carioca rhythms while mixing in hip-hop and pop touches.

Their music often dealt with social issues like poverty and violence, which connected with listeners even as some lyrics drew criticism for being too explicit. They put out three albums between 2016 and 2020, working with artists like MC Kevinho and Ludmilla along the way.

In 2017, they faced plagiarism accusations over a song, which they denied. The group kept recording through it, but that episode lingered as part of their story in Brazil's funk scene.
