Jo Dee Messina grew up in Framingham, Massachusetts before moving to Nashville in 1994. Her debut album came out in 1996, and the single 'Heads Carolina, Tails California' became her breakthrough hit.
Her 1998 album 'I'm Alright' gave her another major song with the same title. Other songs like 'I'm A Survivor' and 'Bye Bye' kept her on country radio through the early 2000s.
In 2003, she dealt with vocal cord nodules that required her to adjust how she sang. She kept recording and performing after that, though her output slowed in later years.
