Joan Sebastian was born José Manuel Figueroa Figueroa in 1951 and grew up in Guerrero, Mexico. He started writing and performing in the 1970s, drawing from traditional Mexican rhythms and Spanish boleros. His early hit "Juliantla" helped establish him, and by the 1990s he had become one of Mexico's most recognizable singer-songwriters.
His 1992 album Mascarada included the song "Oiga" with Prisma, which became widely popular. Other songs like "Un Idiota" and "Me Gustas" showed his range with romantic ballads and rancheras. He wrote about love, heartbreak, and everyday life in straightforward language that connected with listeners across generations.
Sebastian recorded more than fifty albums over his career. He kept writing and performing until his death in 2015, leaving behind a catalog that still gets regular radio play in Mexico.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
