Joana Medeiros grew up in Tomar, Portugal, where she first heard traditional fado and Brazilian bossa nova. She started singing early, influenced by Maria Bethânia and Elis Regina. In 2009, she released her debut album, 'A Vida Quer Lhe Tocar,' which included the title track that became her most recognizable song. The album earned her the Amália Prize for Best Fado Singer.
Her second album, 'O Que Me Deves,' came out in 2013 but didn't find the same reception as her first. Around that time, she began touring internationally, playing shows across Europe and Latin America. Other songs from her catalog include 'Balanço de Baião' and 'Luz Noturna.'
In 2016, Medeiros spoke publicly about dealing with mental health issues and substance abuse. She hasn't released much music since then, but her early work, particularly 'A Vida Quer Lhe Tocar,' still gets played on Portuguese radio.
