João Carvalho

João Carvalho grew up in Alcobaça, Portugal, where his father's record collection introduced him to fado and rock. He started writing songs as a teenager, and in 2009 his debut single 'Escuta-me' became a hit in Portugal. The song's direct lyrics and simple melody connected with listeners in a way that felt personal rather than polished.

In 2011, there was a public dispute about whether one of his songs borrowed too much from another artist's work. He kept recording through it, putting out albums like 'O Que Me Dizem Os Fantasmas' and 'Luz Negra' that maintained his straightforward approach.

Carvalho worked with musicians like guitarist André Santos and drummer João Correia, but the focus always stayed on the songs themselves. Tracks like 'Espera Em Deus' show his tendency to write about faith and doubt without much decoration. He wasn't trying to reinvent Portuguese music so much as make quiet space for it to breathe.
