João Chagas Leite

João Chagas Leite came up in Recife, a coastal city in northeastern Brazil where traditional rhythms were part of the air. He started playing with other musicians there in the early 1990s, working with a sound that mixed those local influences with some electronic touches.

His debut album 'Desassossegos' came out in 1997, and the title track became something of a signature piece, a spare, haunting ballad that people connected with. The record got attention for its lyrics, which some found too direct or explored subjects that weren't common in popular music at the time.

Leite kept writing songs that felt more like poetry set to music, with titles like 'Seiva de Vida e Paz' and 'Por Quem Cantam Os Cardeais.' He never settled into one sound, later bringing in elements from jazz and classical music while staying rooted in that Brazilian singer-songwriter tradition.
