João da Light formed in 1966 with four members: Luiz Gonzaga on guitar, Sérgio Leite on bass, Mário José on drums, and Fábio Guedes as vocalist. They mixed samba rhythms with rock, jazz, and psychedelic sounds, which gave their music an unusual texture for Brazilian popular music at the time.
Their debut album in 1969 was titled after their most recognizable song, "O Astro Iluminado Da Comunicação Brasileira." The track became something of an anthem, though the band's lyrics sometimes ran into trouble with censors during the politically tense 1960s in Brazil.
