João Kyor

João Kyor formed in the early 1980s during Brazil's military regime. The band, led by vocalist João Henrique Kyor, mixed punk and reggae with Brazilian styles. Their debut album came out in 1985, and its track 'Juventude Brasileira' became an anthem for many young listeners at the time.

Their lyrics often dealt with rebellion and social issues, which brought them some trouble with conservative groups and government officials. They faced censorship and threats, but kept playing and writing. Other songs like 'Jardim Molhado do Sertão' and 'A Culpa Foi Sua' show their range beyond just political themes.

They never became a mainstream pop act, but developed a dedicated following who connected with their straightforward sound and direct lyrics. The band's work from that period still gets played on Brazilian rock stations, especially 'Juventude Brasileira,' which has outlasted many of its contemporaries.
