João Lima grew up in Morro do Adeus, a neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro. He started making music in the early 2000s with a group called O Brabo, which included his childhood friend Rafael 'DG' Guimarães. Their sound came from funk carioca, the raw, rhythmic style that was part of the street culture around them.
Its explicit lyrics drew criticism and led to bans from some radio stations. In 2006, Lima was arrested on obscenity and drug charges. For some listeners in Rio's favelas, though, his music felt like an honest, unfiltered voice.
Beyond that hit, songs like 'Monotonia' and 'Nega' kept his profile up through the 2000s and 2010s. He released several albums with O Brabo, including O Brabo in 2004 and O Rei do Funk in 2012. The group's lineup also included members like Thiago 'Thiaguinho' Barbosa and Felipe 'Malvadão' Lima.
