João Trovoada formed in 1986 in Aveiro, Portugal, with João Trovoada on vocals and guitar, Filipe Mendes on bass, and Jorge Palma on drums. Their sound drew from Portuguese traditional music and Afro-Brazilian rhythms.
In 1989 they released the album "Meu Bel Prazer," whose title track became a hit. The song's melancholy melody and lyrics about lost love connected with listeners across Portugal.
After Trovoada left the band in 1992, the remaining members continued performing under the same name with different vocalists. They kept recording songs like "Mulata Brasil" and "Amor Não Tem Preço."
