João Veríssimo came up in Matosinhos, a coastal town in Portugal. He started playing guitar and singing early on, drawing from fado and African rhythms. In 2005, he formed a band with bassist Pedro Gomes and drummer Ricardo Mendes, playing around Lisbon with a mix of folk, rock, and Portuguese styles.
Their 2007 debut album Tempo included the song "Presença," which caught on nationally. The band kept touring anyway, playing to full houses in Portugal and elsewhere.
