Jobriath was born Bruce Campbell in Philadelphia in 1946. He took classical piano lessons as a child and later adopted the stage name Jobriath, which came from the biblical figure Job. In 1971, he signed with Elektra Records, which released his self-titled debut album in 1973.

His music mixed glam rock with folk and theatrical elements. Songs like "Be Still" and "Earthling" explored themes of love and identity.

Jobriath released a second album called Creatures of the Street in 1974. He died by suicide in 1983. A compilation called The Jobriath Collection came out in 1996.
