Joca formed in the late 1990s with a sound that mixed Brazilian rhythms with pop and folk elements. Their debut album in 1998 included the song "Breve," which became their most recognizable track. The band's lineup featured Joca Martins on vocals, Benhur Ribeiro on guitar, Carlos Malta on bass, and Serginho Trombone on trombone.
They released several albums over the following years, including "Segundo" in 2000, "Casa" in 2005, and "Subindo a Serra" in 2009. Other songs like "Royal" and "Nosso Amor" also appeared in their catalog. In 2002, Joca Martins was diagnosed with cancer, which led to a pause in their activities before they resumed performing.
Joca's music sometimes addressed social and political themes, which drew both support and criticism in Brazil. They continued recording into the 2010s with albums like "Praça" in 2013 and "Tempo" in 2018.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
