Joka formed in 1994 in Loures, a suburb of Lisbon. The original lineup included João Pedro on vocals and guitar, Luís Varatojo on bass, João Martins on drums, and Pedro Crispim on keyboards. They put out their self-titled debut album in 1998.
Their second album, "É Só Acreditar," arrived in 2001 and contained the song "Sorte tem quem acredita nela." That track became a chart-topper in Portugal and remains their best-known work. The band has released several other albums since, including "Longe de Tudo" in 2003 and "Retratos" in 2011.
Over time, the lineup shifted. João Pedro and João Martins have remained, while other members like André Santos on guitar and Pedro Alves on bass joined later. Their catalog also includes songs like "I Need To See You Now" and "Amantes de Verão."
