Joca Martins was born José Carlos Martins in Maranhão, Brazil. He grew up with samba and bossa nova, and was influenced by Antônio Carlos Jobim and João Gilberto.
In 1977, he released the album "Recuerdos da '28" with its title track becoming a well-known ballad. That song, along with others like "Desgarrados" and "Última Lembrança," helped establish him in Brazilian music.
He worked with musicians including Marcos Valle on piano, Roberto Menescal on guitar, Edson Machado on drums, and Wagner Tiso as arranger. His later albums included "Amor de Trapo" in 1978 and "Coisa de Samba" in 1982.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
