Jocel Vargas was born in Taquara, Rio Grande do Sul in 1943. He grew up with the gaucho folk traditions of that region before moving to São Paulo in the early 1960s, where he began working in the city's bohemian music circles.
His song 'Diabao Das Taquareiras' came out in 1967 and became his breakout hit. The track's unusual lyrics about a mythical creature gave him a distinctive place in Brazilian music at the time. Other songs like 'É Difícil Esse Tal de Amor' and 'No Interior É Mais Gostoso' show his range with both love songs and regional themes.
Vargas had an unconventional personal style that sometimes drew criticism during Brazil's more conservative periods. He kept writing and recording through different phases, touching on folk, rock, and more experimental approaches without settling into one genre.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
