Jodeci formed in the late 1980s with brothers Donald "DeVante Swing" DeGrate and Dalvin "Mr. Dalvin" DeGrate alongside Cedric "K-Ci" Hailey and Joel "JoJo" Hailey. Their debut album 'Forever My Lady' came out in 1991, featuring the single 'Come & Talk To Me.' DeVante Swing handled most of the production and songwriting, while K-Ci and JoJo's vocal harmonies became their most recognizable element.
Their 1993 album 'Diary of a Mad Band' included 'Freek 'N You,' which topped R&B charts and drew criticism for its explicit lyrics. The group didn't shy away from that criticism, leaning into their raw portrayal of desire. Songs like 'Those Things' and 'Bring On Da Funk' showed their range within that sensual R&B framework.
They were known for a sound that blended soulful vocals with straightforward rhythms, avoiding the polished production that dominated early-90s R&B. The Hailey brothers' harmonies in particular gave their music an immediate, human quality that felt different from their contemporaries.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
