Joe Santana was born José Santana dos Santos in the Brás neighborhood of São Paulo. He first gained attention in 1964 with an audition on the television show "Jovem Guarda," where he performed "Chega de Tormento." That song became a national hit and established his career.
His debut album "Joe Santana" came out in 1965, followed by records like "Perdão" in 1967 and a live album in 1971. He worked with a band called Os Panteras that included guitarist Oswaldo Vecchi, bassist Cláudio Bertrami, and drummer Hélio Delmiro. Other songs like "Deixa Rolar" and "Tô Fora" also became part of his catalog.
Santana's personal life had some difficulties, including a legal issue over unpaid taxes in the late 1960s that led to a short prison stay. He continued performing and recording afterward. "Chega de Tormento" has been covered by artists including Caetano Veloso and Nana Caymmi.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
