Joe Veras was born José Veras Santana in 1978 in Baní, Dominican Republic. His father was an accordionist, and Joe grew up playing the güira, one of the traditional percussion instruments in merengue. In 1998, he joined Los Hermanos Rosario as a background vocalist before going solo.
His first major hit came in 2000 with 'El Hombre de Tu Vida,' a song that established him as a merengue singer with a romantic touch. Other songs like 'Ahora' and 'Antidoto' followed, built around the traditional merengue setup of accordion, güira, and tambora.
In 2007, Veras was involved in a drug-related scandal that was later dismissed by Dominican courts. He continued recording, with albums like 'Adiós Amor' and 'En Tu Presencia' appearing in the following years.
