John Deacon was the bassist for Queen, joining the band in 1971. He wrote several of their songs, including "Another One Bites the Dust" and "I Want to Break Free." His bass playing provided a steady, melodic foundation for the band's more theatrical elements.
Born in Leicester in 1951, Deacon started on guitar before switching to bass. He cited The Beatles and the Beach Boys as early influences. His song "You're My Best Friend" appeared on Queen's 1975 album A Night at the Opera.
After Freddie Mercury's death in 1991, Deacon largely stepped away from music. He played on the posthumous Queen track "Made in Heaven" but has kept a low profile since the mid-1990s.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
