John P. Kee grew up in Fairmont, North Carolina, where his father was a Pentecostal minister. He formed his first band, the New Life Singers, as a teenager. In 1986, he released his debut solo album 'Yes Lord!' and followed it with 'Strength' in 1988, which included the song 'Jesus He's My King.'
His music often featured the New Life Community Choir, which included vocalists like Darlene Evans and Deitrick Haddon at various points. Other songs like 'I Won't Leave You Anymore' and 'It Will Be Alright' became part of his catalog in the years that followed.
In 1991, he released 'The Shelter' after going through a divorce. He continued recording through the 1990s and 2000s with albums like 'Hope,' 'I Believe,' and 'United.' Some of his views on social issues drew attention within Christian circles.
