John Rutter

John Rutter founded the Cambridge Singers while at Cambridge University, an ensemble that became central to his work as both composer and conductor. His music often draws from sacred texts, with pieces like 'For The Beauty Of The Earth' and 'Blest Are They' becoming staples in choral repertoires.

In 1974, he wrote 'The Lord Bless You and Keep You,' a setting of a traditional blessing that gained particular recognition. His approach to composition, which some found more accessible than traditional church music, occasionally drew criticism from purists who preferred more complex arrangements.

Rutter's output includes larger works like his 'Requiem' and 'Magnificat,' but much of his lasting influence comes through shorter anthems and carols that choirs continue to perform. The Cambridge Singers recorded many of these pieces, though the ensemble's membership changed over time as singers came and went.
