Johnny Guitar Watson was born John Watson Jr. in 1935 and grew up in Houston, Texas. He started playing guitar early, influenced by Texas blues players like T-Bone Walker. In the 1950s, he formed the Johnny Guitar Watson Trio and began building a reputation for his live shows.
In the 1960s, his album 'Love Jones' gave him an R&B hit with the title track. By the 1970s, he was making funk records like 'A Real Mother for Ya,' which got some radio bans for its cover and lyrics. Songs like 'Telephone Bill' and 'Ain't That A Bitch' showed his mix of blues guitar and funk rhythms.
Watson's most lasting song came in 1979 with 'Gangster of Love.' Its beat and guitar work made it a standard that other artists would later cover. He kept recording through the 1980s, but health problems eventually limited his performing. He died in 1995.
