Johnny Jordaan

Johnny Jordaan was born Johan Andreas Jordaan in 1924 in Amsterdam's Jordaan district. He taught himself to play accordion as a child, and his music grew from that neighborhood's working-class streets. His 1953 song 'Aan de Voet Van Die Mooie Wester' became an instant classic, capturing the atmosphere around the Westertoren church.

His songs like 'Als Je Voor Een Cent Geboren Bent' and 'Als de Kaarsjes Branden Gaan' spoke plainly about ordinary life in Amsterdam. He recorded albums including De Jordaan Zingt in 1954 and Amsterdamse Jongens in 1956, often performing with just his accordion and straightforward vocals.

In 1957 he was arrested during a demonstration about housing policy, which reflected how his music was tied to the concerns of his neighborhood. He kept recording through the late 1950s with albums like Johnny Jordaan in Concert and Meisjes van de Jordaan, his voice remaining familiar in Dutch homes through radio and early television appearances.
