Johnny Kraaykamp was born in Rotterdam in 1924. He started singing with the vocal group the Skymasters in the early 1950s, working in a jazz and swing style that suited his smooth delivery.
He went solo in 1957 and had his biggest hit the following year with 'Als Ik Naga,' which spent weeks at the top of the Dutch charts. That song's catchy melody and Kraaykamp's easygoing charm made him a familiar voice on the radio. He also recorded other popular numbers like 'Er Is Een Amsterdammer Doodgegaan' and 'Ome Lowie En Tante Jet.'
Kraaykamp kept recording through the 1960s, trying different styles. He put out an album of Kurt Weill songs in 1965 that got some positive notice. Critics sometimes called him a jack of all trades, but he kept working across pop, cabaret, and other formats.
