Jonas Kaufmann is a German tenor who began studying opera in his late teens after initially pursuing classical piano. He was born in Munich. His recording of Robert Stolz's "Du Stadt Meiner Träume (Wien, Wien, Nur Du Allein)" has become particularly well-known.
Kaufmann has performed major roles in operas by Verdi and Puccini, including Otello and La Bohème. He has also recorded German lieder, with Schubert's Winterreise being a notable example. His work includes collaborations with pianist Helmut Deutsch and performances with the Orchestra of the Bavarian State Opera.
