Jorge Xaréu came from Figueira da Foz, a coastal town in Portugal. He started writing and playing music early, drawing from fado's melancholy and Brazilian bossa nova's brighter rhythms.
In 1966, he put out "Rosa Negra." The song caught on quickly across the country, its lyrics and melody connecting with listeners in a way that made him widely known almost overnight.
His career wasn't smooth. Xaréu had a blunt way about him and lived outside conventional lines, which rubbed some critics the wrong way. In 1969 he was arrested on drug charges, a public incident that could have ended things. He kept making music anyway, and for a certain segment of Portuguese youth at the time, that stubbornness meant something.
He recorded several albums in the 1970s and early 1980s, like O Que Somos Hoje and Canto Livre. The music pulled from Portuguese traditions but didn't stay there, touching on rock and folk sounds as it went.
