Jorginho da Beija Flor was born Jorge Fernando da Silva in Rio de Janeiro in 1959. He joined the chorus of the samba group Beija-Flor when he was 15, and his voice eventually caught the attention of the group's director, Neguinho da Beija-Flor.
In the mid-1980s, Beija-Flor released an album called 'Sonhos de Liberdade' that included 'O Sonho do Beija Flor.' Jorginho co-wrote the song with Arlindo Cruz, and it became one of their most recognizable pieces.
His vocal style had an improvisational quality to it, and he stayed with the group for years.
