José Carlos Rodrigues was born in Lisbon, Portugal, on April 16, 1936. He started classical guitar lessons at age 12 and later played cavaquinho with the Orquestra Típica Lisbonense in 1957. His 1971 album 'Pérola Negra' included the song 'Lindo É o Por do Sol,' which became widely known in Portugal.
In 1968, he was arrested and imprisoned for alleged political offenses. He continued making music, releasing albums like 'Saudades de Portugal' in 1972 and 'Fado Menor' in 1990. His wife Maria José died in 1998, and he received the Medal of Cultural Merit from the Portuguese government in 1999.
His recordings include both the popular 'Lindo É o Por do Sol' and the hymn 'Toda Glória, Todo Domínio, Todo Poder!'
