Die Kaiserglocke, die lange verstummt,
von selber dumpf und langsam summt;
und alle Glocken groß und klein
mit vollem Klange fallen ein.
Da heißt's in Speier und weit und breit:
Der Kaiser ist gestorben heut'!
Der Kaiser starb, der Kaiser starb!
Weiß Keiner, wo der Kaiser starb?
Zu Speier, der alten Kaiserstadt,
da liegt auf goldner Lagerstatt
mit mattem Aug' und welker Hand
der Kaiser Heinrich, der fünfte genannt.
Die Diener sie laufen wohl hin und her,
der Kaiser röchelt tief und schwer.
Und als der Tod ans Herze kam,
da tönt's auf einmal wundersam.
Die kleine Glocke, die lange verstummt,
die Armesünderglocke summt,
und keine Glocke stimmet ein,
sie klinget fort und fort allein.
