Archive material and source history
José Carreras was born in Barcelona in 1946 and started studying at the Conservatorio Superior de Música del Liceo there. He made his professional debut at 18, and by 1971 he was singing the lead in Verdi's 'La Traviata' at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, which marked his international breakthrough.
In the 1990s, he joined Plácido Domingo and Luciano Pavarotti as one of The Three Tenors. Their concerts reached millions and brought classical music to wider audiences. Carreras performed 'Amigos para siempre' with them at the 1990 FIFA World Cup in Italy, and the song became a popular anthem.
In 1987, Carreras was diagnosed with leukemia. He had a bone marrow transplant and returned to performing in 1989. His recordings include albums like 'Aida' and 'Tosca' from the early 1990s, and songs such as 'Granada' and 'E Lucevan Le Stelle' are among his notable works.
