José Cassol was born in Itaqui, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil in the early 1900s. He sang and played guitar, and in the 1940s he joined the group Os Namorados do Rio Grande. In 1948 he released the single "Perdi Você," which became his most recognizable song.
Cassol's wife died in the early 1950s, and that loss colored much of his later music. He wrote other songs like "Adeus, Maria" and "Só Falta a Você," but it was "Perdi Você" that stuck. Other Brazilian artists including Sergio Reis and Zezé di Camargo & Luciano have covered his work.
He sang lead and wrote most of the material for Os Namorados do Rio Grande. The band included Mário Zan, João Albino, Orlando Alberto, Ernesto Ferreira, and Antonio Machado.
