José Castelo Branco was a Portuguese singer and guitarist who formed the band Os Conchas in 1964. Their 1967 debut album included his version of 'Pata Pata,' which became his best-known recording. The song was originally by Miriam Makeba, and Castelo Branco's adaptation brought him attention in Portugal.
He continued recording through the 1970s, putting out albums like 'Cantemos o Fado' in 1971 and 'Vou Cantar a Noite Inteira' in 1972. His work often drew from Portuguese folk traditions while incorporating contemporary pop sounds of the era.
While 'Pata Pata' remained his signature track, Castelo Branco built a catalog that included several albums under his own name. He was born in Figueira da Foz in 1944 and performed locally before forming Os Conchas with guitarist António Manuel, bassist José Luis, and drummer João Pedro.
