José Chiecchi was born in 1925 in Piraju, São Paulo. He started playing guitar and singing early on, and by the 1950s he'd formed a band called José Chiecchi e Seus Vocalistas. Their debut album came out in 1954.
That album included 'Desabafo de Filho,' a song about a child's longing for paternal affection. Chiecchi's delivery was raw and direct, and the track connected with listeners in a way that brought him some national attention.
He had an outspoken side that sometimes created friction in the conservative climate of the time. But the song remained his most recognized work, a plainspoken piece about a specific kind of absence.
