José Cura was born in Rosario, Argentina in 1962. He started formal vocal training at 19 and studied at Buenos Aires's Teatro Colón. In 1989, he won the Luciano Pavarotti International Vocal Competition, which helped launch his career as an opera tenor.

His recordings include roles in Puccini's "Tosca" from 1998, Verdi's "Aida" from 2002, and Bizet's "Carmen" from 2005. He's known for performing arias like "Nessun Dorma," "Vesti la giubba," and "E luccevan le stelle." He has worked with conductor Daniel Barenboim and Orchestra La Scala.

In 2000, Cura was diagnosed with spasmodic dysphonia, a vocal disorder. He underwent rehabilitation and returned to performing. He has been outspoken on political and social issues at times. Through his Fundación José Cura, he supports arts education initiatives.
