José Mucavele came from Inhambane, a coastal town in Mozambique. His father was an accordionist, and the rhythms of marrabenta and timbila, along with South African mbaqanga, shaped his sound. He started releasing music in the late 1970s, with his debut album 'Mozambique Explode' coming out in 1979.
In the early 1980s, he put out 'Balada Para Minhas Filhas,' a song written as a letter to his two daughters. It became a hit in Mozambique, with lyrics that spoke to the hopes and challenges of young people in a post-colonial country. The song gave its name to his 1982 album.
Mucavele's music sometimes drew criticism for its political content. One song, 'Munguana N'haxcuna,' was said to condemn police brutality. He worked with musicians like Stewart Sukuma and Gilberto Gil, and his band Grupo Mucavele included family members João and Lucas Mucavele on bass and drums.
