José Rodrigues dos Santos was born in 1957 in Ubá, Minas Gerais. He started singing in rural churches as a child, finding music as an escape from poverty. In 1981, he joined the gospel group Novo Som, and the following year recorded his first solo album, 'Jesus, o Meu Senhor.'
His 1985 album 'Tu És o Meu Senhor' gave him one of his most enduring songs. Other tracks like 'Trabalhar Com Amor' and 'Em Suas Mãos' became staples in Brazilian gospel circles. He worked with other artists in the genre, including Aline Barros and Fernandinho.
In 2014, José faced allegations of sexual misconduct that led to cancelled performances. The charges were eventually dropped, but the episode affected his standing. He continued performing with a regular group of musicians who shared his approach to gospel music.
