Archive material and source history

José Orlando Schäfer was born in 1947 in Lajeado Bonito, a town in Brazil's southern state of Rio Grande do Sul. He started performing in the mid-1960s with the band Os Serranos before going solo in 1971 with his self-titled debut album.

His song 'Canto a Lajeado Bonito' came out in 1974 and became his best-known work, a tribute to his hometown that people there still sing. Other songs like 'Algumas Veredas' and 'Salto do Yucumã' show his connection to the region's landscapes and traditions.

Schäfer kept recording through the 1970s and 1980s, putting out albums like 'Cantor do Rio Grande' in 1973. His music draws from the gaucho culture of southern Brazil, with melodies that feel rooted in that place.
