Background notes

Archive material and source history

José Pacheco was born in 1929 in Crato, Ceará, in Brazil's Northeast. He grew up with the region's traditional forró music and was influenced by Luiz Gonzaga, the King of Baião. Pacheco sang and told stories, drawing from the culture around him.

In 1968, he released "A Chegada de Lampião No Inferno," a song about the legendary outlaw Lampião's arrival in hell. The track became his most well-known work, with Pacheco's vocals giving life to the haunting tale. It connected him to the figure of Lampião, who loomed large in Northeastern folklore.

Pacheco recorded other albums and worked with artists like Zé Ramalho, Jackson do Pandeiro, and Elba Ramalho. Some listeners criticized his songs for how they portrayed Lampião, but Pacheco saw his music as part of the region's history.
