José Pimentel de Carvalho is a Mozambican singer-songwriter from Inhambane. He started playing guitar and writing lyrics early, drawing from local rhythms and some Western folk influences. His 1981 song 'Eu Vou Cantar' became widely known in Mozambique, though its lyrics about social injustice and political oppression also brought him attention from authorities.
Carvalho kept recording through the 1980s and 1990s, putting out albums like 'N'weti' in 1988, 'Vamos Falar da Vida' in 1991, and 'Txunha Txunha' in 1994. He worked with other musicians in a band sometimes called Banda José Pimentel de Carvalho, which included players like guitarist Luís Conceição, bassist Chico António, and drummer Zé Alicate.
He has collaborated with artists outside Mozambique too, including the Brazilian musicians Gilberto Gil and Chico Buarque, and the Cameroonian saxophonist Manu Dibango.
