Archive material and source history
Josias Tavares came up in Salvador, Bahia, where he started playing guitar and singing. He listened to Bob Marley, Gilberto Gil, and Chico Buarque, and the local sounds of samba, reggae, and axé seeped into what he was making.
In 1989, he helped form the band Arma Secreta. Their 1993 album of the same name, with its title track 'Arma Secreta,' got them noticed for its political lyrics and danceable rhythms.
Arma Secreta kept putting out records through the '90s and 2000s, like 'Nós Somos' in 1996 and 'Luz Negra' in 2005. Tavares also wrote songs on his own, including 'O Noivo Vem' and 'Renúncia.'
