José Antônio Barros Junior, known as Jota Barros, was born in Salvador, Bahia in 1962. He grew up hearing the samba, axé, and forró sounds of northeastern Brazil, and started playing music as a teenager. In 1985, he joined the samba group Ara Ketu as lead singer, where he became known for songs like 'Por Amor.'
Barros went solo in 1992. His debut album 'Tô de Cara Nesse Amor' did well, with the title track becoming a popular romantic ballad across Brazil. He kept recording albums that mixed pop, rock, and MPB styles, working with other Brazilian musicians along the way.
