Joy Division

Joy Division formed in Manchester in the late 1970s with Ian Curtis on vocals, Bernard Sumner on guitar, Peter Hook on bass, and Stephen Morris on drums. Their sound was built around Hook's driving basslines, Sumner's angular guitar work, and Curtis's distinctive baritone, which carried lyrics that often dealt with isolation and emotional turmoil. They recorded two studio albums, 'Unknown Pleasures' in 1979 and 'Closer' in 1980.

Curtis's struggles with epilepsy and depression were part of the band's brief existence, and he died by suicide in 1980, just before the release of 'Closer.' The band dissolved afterward. Songs like 'Love Will Tear Us Apart,' 'Disorder,' and 'She's Lost Control' have endured, with 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' becoming particularly well-known outside of post-punk circles.

Their music, spare and atmospheric, avoided the sloganeering of some punk and instead focused on interior states. The production on both albums, especially the use of space and reverb, gave their songs a cold, immersive quality that felt different from what was happening around them. They're often cited as a key influence on later bands in alternative and indie rock, but their catalog remains a specific document of that period in Manchester.
