Jr Thomas & The Volcanos formed in San Francisco during the 1960s, with vocalist Jerome Thomas, Jr leading the group. They played around the Bay Area, developing a sound that mixed soul and R&B. Their song "Chin Up" became their best-known track, giving its name to their debut album in 1965.
The band's lineup included guitarist Joe "Boogaloo" Sample, keyboardist Ron Bryant, bassist Robert "Shadow" Norris, and drummer William "Billy" Hart. They released a few more albums like "Gettin' It Together" in 1966 and "Soul Motion" in 1967. Vocalist Freda Payne spent some time with the group in the mid-1960s as well.
They worked through the usual challenges of a band trying to make it, dealing with money issues and shifting label interest while keeping up their local shows. Their music stayed grounded in that soulful Bay Area feel they'd built their sound around.
