Juan Luis Guerra 4.40

Juan Luis Guerra formed his band 4.40 in Santo Domingo in the mid-1980s, bringing together musicians like saxophonist Roger Zayas and drummer Juan Carlos Alfonseca. They started playing bachata, a Dominican style that hadn't yet broken internationally. Their 1990 album 'Bachata Rosa' changed that, with songs like 'Burbujas de Amor' becoming hits across Latin America and beyond.

Guerra's writing gave the band its character, mixing bachata's guitar patterns with pop melodies and jazz touches. You can hear that blend in tracks like 'A Bilirrubina' and 'Kitipun,' where the rhythm stays grounded but the arrangements open up. Later albums like 'Fogaraté' and 'Ni Es Lo Mismo Ni Es Igual' kept experimenting without losing the core sound.

They've released steady work since, including 'La Llave de Mi Corazón' in 2007 and 'Todo Tiene Su Hora' in 2014. Songs like 'Visa Para Un Sueño' and 'Coronita de Flores' show how Guerra's writing has stayed direct and melodic even as the production has gotten cleaner. The band still plays, and Guerra still writes most of the material.
