Juliano Buteco

Juliano Buteco, born Juliano Nascimento, came up in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro. He taught himself guitar and played with local samba groups before gaining attention through performances in bars and community events. In 2015, his song 'Sobre o Mar' broke through nationally, its lyrics speaking to the experiences of people in those neighborhoods.

His music draws from samba, pagode, and funk carioca, with songs like 'A cara do peixe' and 'A estória do Moisés' reflecting life in the communities he comes from. He's been vocal about social issues, particularly police brutality and inequality, and has been involved in protests and community programs.

Some have criticized his portrayal of favela life as reinforcing stereotypes, but he's continued to focus on those themes in his work. He performs with a band that includes musicians like Marcel, though the lineup has shifted over time.
