Junkbox formed in Lisbon in 2001 with João Rui Encarnação on vocals and guitar, Carlos Mendes on drums, and André Pereira on bass. They were later joined by Susana Gonçalves on vocals and keys and Miguel Santos on guitar and programming. Their first album, Jardim De Inverno, came out in 2005, followed by A Sombra Do Som in 2008.
Their sound pulls from indie rock, folk, and electronica, with some Brazilian bossa nova and Portuguese traditional music in the mix. Songs like Canção De Ninar and Deixa Pra Lá show their range, from ethereal ballads to more grounded tracks. They put out The Big Deal in 2011 and The Last Of The Hippies in 2015.
While their early work met some skepticism, they kept at it. Their music doesn't fit neatly into one category, which has been part of their appeal. They're still based in Lisbon, working with the same core group that started over twenty years ago.
