Juvenile

Juvenile came out of New Orleans in the mid-1990s with a raw, street-level sound that felt specific to that city. The track 'Back That Azz Up' became one of those anthems that defined a moment, built on a bouncing Mannie Fresh beat and Juvenile's conversational flow. His 1998 album '400 Degreez' was the commercial peak, anchored by that single and 'Ha', selling millions without smoothing out the edges of his delivery.

He worked frequently with producer Mannie Fresh and the Cash Money collective, which included a young Lil Wayne. The sound was percussive and trunk-rattling, built for car speakers. Later singles like 'Slow Motion' with Soulja Slim kept his name in rotation, even as the mainstream rap landscape shifted around him.

Juvenile's catalog is straightforward, he made New Orleans bounce music for the streets, with a direct, unadorned style. He never really left that lane, and the records hold up because they don't try to be anything else. You hear 'Back That Azz Up' or 'Set It Off' and you're immediately back in that late-'90s, early-2000s Cash Money era.
